About Kalakari

My proposal — the one that started it all.

About Kalakari

Crafted with care.
Built to last.

Kalakari started when I was trying to make the perfect engagement ring for my now fiancée. I couldn't find anything that felt quite right, so I went back to my family's roots in Surat, India and worked directly with craftsmen to create it myself. Afterward, friends who were proposing soon asked my fiancée and I for help with their rings. We loved helping create the perfect piece of jewelry for them, and soon after we started Kalakari.

Today we work closely with each client, talking through ideas, materials, and details together so the piece feels perfect. The process stays clear and comfortable, and you'll always understand what you're choosing and why.

The goal is simple: help you create something meaningful you'll treasure for a lifetime.

Guided, Clear Process

We shape the design together and explain options in plain language so every choice feels understood, intentional, and right for you.

Lab-grown and natural diamonds are chemically, physically, and optically identical. The difference is how they are formed.

Natural diamonds develop underground over billions of years under extreme heat and pressure. Lab-grown diamonds are created using advanced technology that replicates those same conditions in a controlled environment.

At Kalakari, we use CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) lab-grown diamonds, which are grown atom by atom. This process allows for exceptional control over purity, structure, and performance, resulting in real diamonds with the same brilliance, hardness, and durability as natural diamonds.

CVD diamonds are created by placing a small diamond seed into a chamber filled with carbon-rich gas. When the gas is energized, carbon atoms bond to the seed and crystallize layer by layer into a diamond.

This method allows for greater control over clarity, color, and crystal structure compared to earlier lab-growing techniques. As a result, CVD diamonds are widely regarded as the gold standard for lab-grown diamonds.

Type IIa diamonds are the highest purity classification of diamonds, containing little to no nitrogen impurities. This results in exceptional optical transparency and brilliance.

All of the lab-grown diamonds Kalakari uses are Type IIa, which means they are composed of 100% carbon with negligible impurities.

While only about 1–2% of natural diamonds are Type IIa, modern lab-grown diamonds can be produced predominantly in this category due to controlled conditions in the CVD process.

Lab-grown diamonds generally have a significantly lower environmental and social impact than mined diamonds.

According to multiple independent environmental studies, lab-grown diamonds use up to 60–85% less water and produce approximately 60% fewer carbon emissions compared to traditional diamond mining. They also avoid land disruption and many of the labor and sourcing concerns associated with mining.

Yes. Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds. They are not simulants like moissanite or cubic zirconia. They share the same chemical composition, crystal structure, and physical properties as natural diamonds and are graded using the same standards.

Yes. Our diamonds are graded by respected independent laboratories such as IGI or GIA, depending on the stone. Certification details are shared with you as part of the design process.

Yes. While we specialize in Type IIa lab-grown diamonds, we can also work with natural diamonds and select gemstones depending on availability, design requirements, and sourcing considerations. If you're interested in a natural diamond or a specific gemstone, please inquire and we'll walk through the options and tradeoffs together.

We use solid precious metals only, including solid gold (14k or 18k) and platinum. We never use plated, filled, or vermeil metals in our fine jewelry.

Yes. All gold jewelry is crafted using solid gold. Platinum is also available for clients who prefer its weight, durability, and naturally white finish.

The metal you choose affects color, durability, weight, and long-term wear. We guide you through these considerations during the design process.

14k Gold (58.5% pure gold)

  • Highly durable and resistant to scratching
  • Ideal for everyday wear and intricate settings
  • 14k Yellow Gold: balanced, warm tone and excellent durability
  • 14k White Gold: rhodium plated for a bright white finish
  • 14k Rose Gold: alloyed with copper for a soft pink hue; extremely durable

18k Gold (75% pure gold)

  • Richer, more saturated gold color
  • Slightly softer than 14k, but still suitable for daily wear
  • 18k Yellow Gold: deep, classic gold tone
  • 18k White Gold: slightly warmer undertone; rhodium plated
  • 18k Rose Gold: deeper, warmer pink hue than 14k rose gold

Platinum 950 (95% pure platinum)

  • Naturally white and does not require rhodium plating
  • Extremely durable and dense; heavier feel than gold
  • Develops a soft patina over time rather than wearing away

There is no single "best" metal. The right choice depends on your lifestyle, aesthetic preferences, and how you want the piece to age.

Our process is collaborative, clear, and intentionally unhurried. We guide you through design, stone selection, CAD development, and final approval before your piece is handcrafted by skilled artisans. Every detail is confirmed before production begins.

Custom design allows us to prioritize proportion, craftsmanship, and intention rather than forcing designs into preset templates. Every Kalakari piece is made for a specific wearer and purpose.

No. We do not set outside stones or heirloom diamonds. Maintaining full control over sourcing, design, and production allows us to guarantee quality, structural integrity, and craftsmanship at every stage.

No. We do not offer settings-only projects. Each Kalakari piece is designed and crafted as a complete work to ensure proper proportions, durability, and long-term wear.

That's completely normal. We take the time to explain options, walk through tradeoffs, and refine details until the design feels right. We do not move forward until you're confident.

Yes. Education is a core part of our process. We explain how choices around stone shape, size, setting style, and metal affect appearance, durability, and cost.

Yes. Budget is part of the initial conversation, and we guide design and material decisions thoughtfully to balance aesthetics, quality, and longevity.

Because every piece is custom made to order, all details must be confirmed before production begins. This step ensures accuracy, alignment, and confidence.

We believe fine jewelry should be priced with integrity. Our pricing reflects materials, craftsmanship, and time, not inflated markups or artificial discounts. As demand grows, pricing may evolve, but our commitment to transparency and quality remains unchanged.

Custom price quotes are valid for two weeks. Because diamond and precious metal pricing can fluctuate, we recommend confirming within the quoted window.

Not necessarily. Custom pricing reflects your specific design and materials rather than preset retail pricing. Many clients find custom allows them to prioritize what matters most.

All Kalakari jewelry is handcrafted in Surat, India, widely known as the Diamond City for its global leadership in diamond cutting and fine jewelry craftsmanship.

Surat handles about 90% of the world's polished diamonds and is home to generations of skilled karigars (craftsmen) who have refined techniques blending tradition and precision.

Most custom pieces take approximately 6–8 weeks from final design approval to completion. Timelines are confirmed before production begins.

Finished pieces are shipped via USPS Priority Express, fully insured, with tracking and signature required upon delivery.

Because each Kalakari piece is made specifically for you, all sales are final. That's why we take extra care to review every detail with you upfront, so there are no surprises and the process feels clear and comfortable.

We genuinely love sharing the pieces we create and celebrating the stories behind them. If you're comfortable with it, we'd be honored to feature your jewelry. We'll always ask for your permission first, and we completely respect your choice either way.

Kalakari is pronounced kuh-lah-kah-ree. The name comes from karigari, reflecting a deep respect for craftsmanship and the care that goes into creating something well.
